Top 10 Ways to Create a Successful Boating Partnership

Boaters are passionate for what they do and it’s not surprising that they’d like to share that passion with their significant others. However, boating can be a tough hobby to adapt to. BoatUS explored some great ways to introduce boating to your lover – hopefully these tips can help you get your loved ones on board!

1. Introduce your partner to boating gently. Plan each boating day so your partner gradually builds confidence in your skills and at the same time gains his/her own confidence.

2. Everyone is watching you. Avoid entering marinas during peak hours. It can be crowded and hectic when you’re trying to anchor, causing you and ultimately your partner anxiety. Easing your nerves makes for a more peaceful and romantic moment.

3. No yelling. It’s inevitable that at some point during your journey, you will need to grab the attention of your mate. However, yelling can seem harsh or inconsiderate. If possible, try wearing two-way radio headsets or using hand signals to communicate…it’s far more attractive than screaming at the top of your lungs.

4. Give your partner (and yourself) room to make mistakes. You might be trying to keep your significant other from making the mistakes you once made as a novice…but that’s how you learned, right? Let them do the same. Ladies, consider taking an all-female boating course. It’ll help you gain confidence in a less threatening atmosphere.

5. Don’t make false promises about boating. Boating isn’t always easy or romantic; so don’t tell your partner otherwise! Just be honest with them and let them know that it is a physical activity. That way, they will come on board open-minded.

6.  Make and keep real promises about what boating can offer. What does your significant other love to do? Try incorporating those interests into your time on the water. For example, if they love antiquing, take time to stroll the shops in new towns you discover.

7. Contingency planning calms fears. Unfortunately, accidents do happen so it’s best to be prepared for the worst. Take a class together on how to bring your boat back into port alone. This includes everything from anchoring to contacting assistance should your partner be out of commission.

8. Encourage your partner to talk to other experienced boaters. There’s nothing as contagious as enthusiasm. Try to minimize encounters with people, lectures, books, and movies that emphasize the negative aspects of boating.

9. Create an exit strategy. For long journeys, reassure them before you board that if the experience doesn’t go as pleasantly as you had hoped, there’s a way out. With that peace of mind, your partner will be more open to try and reach your final destination.

10. Be logical about boat maintenance. Maintenance can be a pain. However, it is definitely manageable. Help to avoid breakdowns by making advanced gear inspections part of your routine!

What are some key takeaways necessary to create a successful boating partnership? Establish a sense of interdependence, share the same boating goals, trust each other when the going gets rough, and develop good communication methods.

How do you and your partner manage the “love boat?”  We’d like to hear from you!

Top 10 Ways to Avoid Theft

It’s no secret that theft of/on a boat is usually easier than theft on land.  Seaworthy Magazine takes a look at theft through the eyes of a thief:  How hard would it be to steal the boat?  How long would it take?  Here are the top 10 ways to protect yourself against theft:

1. Hide your trailer. Most boats are still taken while hooked up to their trailer, so park the trailer as far away from the road as possible or chain it to a tree or sturdy post.  If nothing else, remove a few tires and store them inside.

2. Store equipment at home. If you have a small outboard engine, take it home!  The more stuff you take off, the less attractive your boat will be to a thief.

3. Lighting is key. Make sure there is good lighting where you keep your boat.  Would a burglar feel threatened?

4. Close your curtains. Keep them drawn to keep prying eyes off of valuables.  If you don’t have curtains, make sure to store alcoholic beverages and valuables out of sight.

5. Be smart about where you store your keys. Don’t leave your keys in a cockpit locker.  This is a common practice and thieves know it!  Safest bet: take your keys home.

6. Invest in an alarm system. Rest easy with the purchase of a cheap alarm system… even the smallest alarm can scare off a thief.

7. Avoid displaying “For Sale” signs. This gives thieves an excuse to snoop around without drawing suspicion.

8. Display anti-theft device warning stickers. Often thieves pass up on a boat that appears to be well guarded.

9. Visit your boat frequently. If you can’t check it frequently, make arrangements with other boat owners to check on each other’s boats… sometimes thieves will stake out the site ahead of time.

10. Display your BoatU.S. reward decal. A $1,000 cash reward will be paid to any person or persons providing information resulting in the arrest and conviction of anyone stealing or vandalizing a boat or its equipment registered with BoatU.S.

What are the chances of your boat being stolen?

Personal Watercraft = 10 out of 1,000

Runabouts = 2 out of 1,000

Cruisers (with cabins) = 8 out of 1,000

Trawlers = 3 out of 10,000

Sailboats = 2.5 out of 10,000

*Based on a 10 year study of the BoatU.S. Marine Insurance Claim Files

Hope this helps!  Did we leave something out?  How do YOU keep yourself protected against theft?

Tips for surviving lightning storms

Top 10 Tips for Preparing for Summer Lightning Storms

BoatUS’ Seaworthy Magazine recently came out with a list of ways to prepare for summer lightning storms.  Summer thunderstorms prove to be extremely dangerous for boaters due not only to wind and waves, but lightning strikes as well.  In response to the abundance of tornados the south has seen in the past few months, here is a list of the top 10 ways to prepare yourself for summer lightning storms:

1. Don’t wait until it’s too late: get off the water and to a safe harbor early.
2. Inside is best: If you can’t get to a safe shore quick enough, take cover inside any cabin on board.
3. Keep away from metal: If there is no cabin to seek shelter in, be sure to stay away from all metal objects including masts, chainplates, metal railings, wheels, and refrigerators.
4. Don’t be a lightning rod: While in an open boat, stay low and in the center and take off all jewelry.  This will decrease your chances of being struck by lightning.
5. Stay out of the water: Don’t fish during a storm or touch the water.
6. Disconnect the power and the antenna leads to your electronics: Your equipment could be damaged if struck by lightning, so it’s best if you unplug any and all electronics.
7. Lower antenna: Unless they are a form of a lightning protection system.
8. Stay silent: The VHF is to be used only for emergencies.
9. Lightning grounding protection systems: Make sure grounding systems are clear of corrosion.  They provide lightning with a way to enter and exit the boat safely.
10. Dissipater dilemma: BoatUS insurance claims files show that boats with “brush-like” dissipaters mounted at the top of the mast have been struck by lightning.

These tips will help keep you from getting hit, but if you do find yourself in that unfortunate circumstance: 1) check people first, 2) check the bilge for ruptures, 3) check electronics and compass, and 4) consider a short haul, to check the bottom thoroughly.

How do you prepare for lightning storms? We’d like to hear from you!

Top 10 Reasons Boat Sales Will Climb

Good news for your friendly local boat dealer…if Bill Sisson is right, your dealer is going to have a better year than he’s had in a while. This week’s Top 10 List comes from Bill’s blog post, Top 10 Reasons Boat Sales Will Rise in 2011 on Soundings Trade Only.

The number one reason Bill says boat sales will increase is our confidence is up! CNN Money.com reported in February 2011, that consumer confidence “hit a three-year high.” It looks like more of us are ready to spend some of our hard-earned money on that boat we’ve had our eye on.

Not only are we confident about spending money, we are actually spending. Bill’s second indicator of boat sales rising is that consumer spending has been up most of the last 18 months. The Spokesman-Review reported in February 2011, “consumer spending rose 0.7 percent in December, the sixth straight monthly increase.”

Want to read the list in its entirety? Check it out his blog at Soundings Trade Only!

Top 10 Ways To Keep Our Waters Green

Top 10 Ways To Keep Our Waters Green

Top 10 Ways To Keep Our Waters Green

Top 10 Ways To Keep Our Waters Green

Since I entered college, I’ve grown more aware of our environment and what I do to harm it. Like most people, I still commute to work in my Jetta and forget to bring my reusable bags to the store. A few days ago I got another “green” itch and decided to search for a Top 10 list about how we boaters can boat more “green.” Look and you shall receive!

This Top 10 List: Top 10 Ways to Keep Our Waters Green comes from David Sullivan, a staff writer for factoidz.com!

I will let you read the article in its entirety but here are a few I’d like to personally expand on.

Sullivan’s first way we boaters can help is to not “throw anything into the water that didn’t come out of it.” I can’t agree with him more! Living in a state with the second dirtiest waterways in the US brings this point more to life for me. When I am out on the boat I make sure to pack a trash bag and if for some reason I forget I just put the trash back into the cooler.

“Keep only the fish you are going to eat,” comes in at number two. Another great way we can help! If the fish is too small to eat, throw the little guy back! And when you hook the perfect catch reel it in! Don’t forget eating your fresh catch was featured in our Top 10 Boat Foods blog post!

I think my most favorite way we can help comes in at number ten, “Teach your children respect for the water, just as you teach them safe operation of a boat.” It’s true, our children are our future!

Do you have any ideas of how to keep our waters green? I want to hear about them! Comment on this post and together we can make our own Top 10 List!!
