Racing lobster boats heat up Maine waters

>Lobster boats are not known for their speed on the water, but don’t tell that to the lobster boat captains who race their boats in an event described as a “Kentucky Derby for the trapping set”.

The New York Times features a story on races held by the Maine Lobster Boat Racing Association and how boat captains creatively weight their boats for maximum speed. The races are held near a fishing village on the tip of Deer Isle, Maine.

The boat races are a friendly event and a welcome break from the tough work of making a living from lobster trapping.
