Holiday lights decorate boats for Christmas

Front lawns and Christmas trees are not the only places you will find strings of lights, now holiday cheer is brightening up marinas too.

The Decatur Daily features the story of Gary and Jewel Vest, a couple who are not just decorating their home this holiday season, but their boat as well. The couple’s 41 foot Gibson cabin yacht will be glowing with around 5000 lights.

Why would someone decorate a boat with Christmas lights?

Gary Vest says that more people will see his boat than his house. His wife, Jewel, says it his way of spending more time on his boat.

    >I have been decorating my boat for Christmas and lighted boat parades for the last ?? 15 yrs ?? … I won best in class and best in show 2 years straight with my first sailboat, a 30′ racer cruiser. One year was a tie with a boat in another class. I now have a 38′ sailboat and still decorate even though we are in another marina and dont have a competition to participate in. We typically use 10,000+ mini-lights and others as well as various contrived constructions. In Parades we used a 3000 watt generator and ran it at its’ limit. Now we use shore power and run up our December electric bill. But it is worth it!
