10 tons of fishing gear removed from ocean floor

The website for the University of California at Davis reports on a program to remove lost fishing nets, lobster traps, and other lost gear from the ocean floor. So far, 10 tons of lost fishing gear has been recovered from the California Channel Islands.

The removal project brought together commercial fishermen and UC Davis to locate and recover the lost gear. Lost fishing nets and other gear can be a hazard to sealife and to boaters.

The recovered gear, ranging from fishing rods to large commercial fishing nets, was sorted to determine what could be recycled. Over 550 pieces of fishing gear was recovered over the five week project. Nets and traps that were still in working order or repariable will be donated to local fishing crews.
